I jumped out of “Corporate America” and started my company a little over 2 years ago. My story may be similar to others in that I was married (still am and still happily), two kids, a mortgage, and a quality of life that I worked hard for, appreciated, and worked well for my family. The catch was that I was no longer fulfilled in my career and had always planned on being an entrepreneur, but never quite came to the conclusion on when it made sense, if ever…
I am writing this post because, like most other entrepreneurs (or budding entrepreneurs), the majority of the entrepreneurial material concerns companies that were built over a weekend, at some hackathon, and sold a month later for billions, oh yeah and the founders did all of this part-time whilst on a European vacation.
What you didn’t hear was that the founders were in their early 20’s, lived with mom, so had very little relative risk, exposure, or otherwise holding them back from their “destiny”. No mention of the sleepless nights and continuous anxiety as to whether or not their “hunch” was right or a complete and utter waste of time and money…With this rosy and unrealistic entrepreneurial scenario in mind, I have decided to roll out a blog series thats aim is to provide a more realistic view into entrepreneurship, for those that don’t live with mom, and a few of the lessons I have learned, and continue to learn, along the way.
My tenure is short as compared to many other entrepreneurs, but feel far too many stories are fluff and don’t provide any details/context on what it’s really like. I’ll attempt to give you a glimpse, which I hope will prepare future entrepreneurs for quicker success and current entrepreneurs a little nostalgia on the trials and tribulations…Who knows, maybe they will learn something too.
Would love to hear similar stories from people that pulled the ripcord or almost pulled the ripcord (there is still hope for you).
